Acceptable Identification

For any notarization to be valid you must have current, not expired forms of ID. The following are acceptable forms of ID and some alternatives in case you don't have anything on the list.

Accepted Forms of ID

A notary typically accepts a current, unexpired government-issued ID with a photo and signature.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

Driver's license
State-issued ID
U.S. passport
U.S. military ID
Permanent resident card (green card)
Inmate ID
Border Crossing Card (BCC)

Some states require IDs to be issued in the United States, but most allow foreign IDs. If your state only requires a "government-issued ID", you should check that a school ID is issued by a public school and meets your state's other requirements.

If a signer doesn't have an acceptable ID, they can sometimes verify their identity with a credible witness. The requirements for credible witnesses vary by state.
